REPORTS TO: Jayne Meservey and/or Dr. Beth Caldarello

CONTRACT TERMS: Grant Position/Spring 2019

LOCATION: Trenton, Missouri-Main Campus


Position Summary: The peer counselor provides support and encouragement to students by helping students connect to the college environment and access services and other resources available.

Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Attend designated training
  • Attend class sessions for mentoring hours
  • Complete required reports and participate in project evaluation
  • Refer students to NCMC resources
  • Maintain a commitment to the program for designated semester
  • Potentially coordinate co-curricular activities and conduct team-building activities
  • Maintain weekly communication with supervisors about activities, student contacts with timesheet included.
  • Promote student activities
  • Promote budgeting education/default prevention for students
  • Promote and assist with class registration of students

Qualifications:

Skills:Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Attention to detail. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively with others. Working knowledge of campus resources and platforms including MyCompass and Blackboard. Successfully completed at least 12 credit hours at NCMC with GPA of 2.8 or higher. Obtained a recommendation from at least one NCMC faculty member.

Physical Demands: Moving about between buildings on the NCMC campus. Able to use stairs or elevator to access classrooms and study rooms. Be available for some evening study sessions with students; able to do repetitive tasks; remain stationary at a desk for short periods of time; use of keyboard (or other input device) for communication.

Environmental Demands: Fluctuations while walking on tile and carpeted floors in a heated and air conditioned environment.

Position Summary: The peer counselor provides support to Financial Aid office and Associate Vice President of Student Affairs with retention and default prevention initiatives.

Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Attend three webinar trainings
  • Make calls to delinquent borrowers
  • Create sidewalk chalk messages around campus
  • Send out strategic mailings
  • Assist with default prevention/financial literacy events
  • Assist with default prevention/financial literacy presentations
  • Meet one-on-one with peers to counsel on a variety of subjects to include budgeting and loan counseling.
  • Assist students with FAFSA completion, Student Loan Entrance and Exit Counseling, navigating NSLDS.
  • Assist with compiling data requested by MDHE

Qualifications:

• Experience in telemarketing or other sales environment with demonstrated persuasion skills
• Licenses in property, casualty, health and life (or these must be obtained in order to continue employment with the agency)
• Prior insurance experience is not required
• Organization, prioritization and multi-tasking skills
• PC skills; experience with Windows-based computer applications a plus
• Ability to learn American Family products, services, and computer systems
• A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent
• Acceptable driving record

  • Advance student learning through exemplary instruction in accordance with the established course syllabus.
  • Model effective oral and written communication that engages the students, provides clarity and improves student learning.
  • Set clear expectations for the course by publishing grading criteria, assignments and examination dates on course syllabus and Blackboard.
  • Ensure the content and level of material included on exams and assignments corresponds to the student learning objectives of the course.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and tested experience.

Experience: Teaching or training experience preferred. Extensive experience with electrical, controls, and/or automation in an industrial or agricultural setting may substitute for Bachelor’s degree.

Skills: Proven organizational, analytical and time mgmt. skills.  Ability to build relationships and maintain a high degree of confidentiality. Strong verbal, written, and communication skills.

  • Make yourself available to help students and staff.
  • Dust computer monitors, towers, and keyboards.
  • Supervise activity in the lab and keep the noise level to a minimum.
  • Replenish the paper for the printers.
  • Check to see if printer toner is low, and if it is report it.
  • Keep lap monitor desk clean and organized.
  • Keep all labs neat and tidy.
  • Close and lock windows.
  • Turn off computer lab lights when done cleaning them and lock the door.
  • Perform other tasks that are assigned.

Tutors will act as referral agents for students struggling either academically or personally and should have a genuine concern for the needs of students.

Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Conduct small-group or one-to-one tutoring sessions
  • Help students develop positive study habits and skills
  • Assist students with projects and prepare for quizzes and tests
  • Explain concepts and ask questions that encourage students to think and work independently
  • Encourage students to complete homework assignments
  • Be at work on time as scheduled (If the tutor is unable to be at work in the ARC, a call should be placed to the Tutoring Coordinator at ext. 1334)
  • Maintain contact with the Tutoring Coordinator and appropriate staff members
  • Proctor course level tests under supervision of professional staff
  • Exhibit respect and a helpful attitude toward all students and NCMC faculty and staff
