Former Residents Make Generous Donation

November 7, 2013

Harry and Alice Bratton of Lee’s Summit recently donated $105,500 to the North Central Missouri College Foundation to be used during the upcoming restoration of Geyer Hall and its new Learning Commons Project. The Brattons were able to do an IRA Charitable Rollover, which allows donors aged 70 ½ or older to move up to $100,000 from an IRA directly to a non-profit institution without having to pay income tax on the funds. This IRA Charitable Rollover law has been extended to the end of 2013.

Trenton natives Harry and Alice Bratton truly love TJC/NCMC, and their passion for the college can be seen through their most recent donation to the North Central Missouri College Foundation. Bratton comments, “Alice and I are who we are, what we are, where we are and how we are because of the start given to us at TJC! Never,” he goes on to say, “underestimate Trenton and (TJC) NCMC!” Alice was the Registrar at TJC in 1954 and 1955, and, after his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1955, Bratton found himself sitting in class at TJC only nine days later. He notes that his transition from being a GI to a college student was severe and recalls being homesick for his fellow soldiers in his section. As he felt suddenly thrown into college life with multiple study assignments due on deadlines, he noted that his whole way of thinking had to be revised and study habits re-established. “Things were coming at me fast, but this is where TJC serves best. Classes were small and instructors cared whether you understood and learned,” Harry commented. “When I graduated from TJC in 1956, there were seven of us getting diplomas.”

After TJC, Harry Bratton transferred to the University of Missouri-Columbia where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1960. During this time, Alice worked full-time as a secretary at the MFA Insurance Company’s Home Office in Columbia. Thereafter, Harry began his 33.5 year career as a Mechanical Engineer with Bendix Corporation in KC (now Honeywell, F.M.&T.). Alice began working as a secretary at Western Electric Plant in Grandview, and 28 years later she retired as an Executive Secretary from AT&T in Lee’s Summit (now Lucent Technologies). Harry comments, “None of this would have been possible without the support and encouragement we received from TJC and the people of Trenton, Missouri.”

Others interested in making donations to the NCMC Foundation might be interested in attending its Second Annual Estate Planning Seminar on Monday, November 18. The IRS Charitable Rollover provision, along with many other topics regarding estate planning, will be shared at this seminar. NCMC Foundation Board Members Bruce Constant (CPA) and Allan Seidel (attorney) will be presenting the free program.

For more information about IRA Charitable Rollovers or to RSVP for the Estate Planning Seminar, please contact Teresa Cross, NCMC Foundation Director, at 660-359-3948 x1403 or by e-mail at tcross@mail.ncmissouri.edu.
