The Student Missouri State Teacher Association (SMSTA) of NCMC took on several service project for the holiday season. The group has continued to sponsor “Merry Mittens” for several years, collecting mittens, hats, and gloves for children in local schools. This project grew this year with collection boxes set up in several local businesses and sites on the NCMC campus. There were approximately 150 items collected this year and, the donations were distributed to several area schools.

President Amanda Tobias, Vice-president Kayla Hyer and the local SMSTA chapter connected with administrator Sherrie Wohlgemuth, of the Chillicothe Resource Center, a homeless shelter serving the entire Green Hills area. SMSTA teamed up with Cricket Wireless of Chillicothe and the Chillicothe Police Department to set up collection boxes for canned goods, paper products, blankets, towels and other things needed by the residents of the Resource Center.  Cricket Wireless of Chillicothe waived activation fees to customers who contributed items for the shelter.  Other Contributors include Laredo School and several local churches which helped by doing canned food and toilet paper drives. Mrs. Tobias and Ms. Hyer reached out on social media as well, acquiring many clothing and household items for the shelter. The Grundy County community responded with an inspirational amount of Christmas Spirit.  Members of H&H Action Auction, Yours, Mine and Ours, and $$Dollar Days$$ were huge contributors. In all, SMSTA was able to deliver four van loads of donations to the Chillicothe Resource Center (approximately 924 items).

Another cause that the SMSTA group took on is the Women’s Health Clinic of Trenton. SMSTA set up several canisters throughout the community and were able to present the clinic with the total of $122.50.
