Internet and the GED

Work on your education via the Internet!

Study at your own pace! Improve your job skills. Begin any time!

Daily attendance at a class site is no longer necessary, as long as students have access to the Internet, whether it is at home or elsewhere.

Just meet with the instructor in Trenton for enrollment and the initial testing, then attend on a monthly basis for any follow-up testing that is to be done.

These services are available to interested persons at no cost!

Any adult with access to an Internet connection can use this service free of charge after enrolling with AEL. SkillsTutor.com is an Internet program that will assess an adult’s needs and design a personalized program for them to work on at their own pace, within their own schedule. “This can be done in the privacy of their own home or at any location with Internet access, such as libraries, community centers and churches,” said John Stains, AEL program director.

Macintosh or PC computers can be used; minimum PC requirements include a Pentium 166 MHz computer with Windows 95 and a 56K modem.

Like other AEL sites, NCMC’s Adult Education and Literacy is a gatekeeper to the SkillsTutor.com program and provides necessary training. After 25 hours of using SkillsTutor.com, students return to the local AEL site for a progress assessment.

Stains said the St. Joseph site has been using it since July 2000 and has about 100 students so far. From an administration perspective, the online program is great since it increases the number of people who can be served by AEL staff without having to increase office costs dramatically. Funding for the program is provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
