Student Loans

Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized

A loan is money one can borrow but must pay back with interest. So before taking out a loan, be sure to explore other options like grants and/or scholarships, which is money one does not have to pay back. Also, know the differ-ences between a Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized loan…

they are as follows:

  • For undergrad students with financial need
  • School determines amount
  • Amount may not exceed financial need
  • U.S. Dept. of Ed pays the interest while you are in school, first six months after you leave school, and/or during a deferment.
  • *** Information from: StudentAid.Ed.Gov

  • For undergrad and grad students
  • Do not need to demonstrate financial need
  • School determines amount
  • Amount based on cost of attendance and other fi-nancial aid you receive
  • Student pays interest while in school or it will accrue and be added to your their principal.
