Finding My Voice at North Central Missouri College
When I first came to North Central Missouri College, I was the quiet, straight-A student who preferred to stay behind the scenes. I was focused, determined, and proud of my grades — but truthfully, I was terrified of speaking up. I avoided attention whenever I could, always assuming leadership and public speaking were for “other people.” Looking back now, I hardly recognize that version of myself.
NCMC became the place where everything changed. It wasn’t overnight, but little by little, the support and encouragement I found there helped me grow into the person I am today — someone who’s not afraid to take charge, help in the community, and use my voice with confidence.
A huge part of that transformation came from my time in PAS (Postsecondary Agriculture Students). At first, I joined just to be involved — never expecting it to shape my entire future. I remember how nervous I was at my first competition, palms sweaty and voice shaking. But my instructors and teammates never stopped believing in me, even when I doubted myself. They saw potential I couldn’t yet see.
Through PAS, I learned to stand tall in interviews, to speak clearly and with conviction, and to share my passion for agriculture with others. The opportunities to compete — and even rank nationally — didn’t just build my résumé; they built me. They taught me that my voice has value, and that confidence isn’t about being the loudest in the room — it’s about believing in what you have to say.
Because of NCMC, I found that belief. Today, I’m proud to be involved with local organizations, finding my way to our local Farm Bureau board members, helping at horse shows, and assisting in lessons at our community barn. I’ve discovered how rewarding it is to give back — to encourage others the same way NCMC encouraged me.
North Central Missouri College didn’t just teach me academics. It gave me courage, community, and the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and into who I was meant to be.
