Asa Palmeri, an online ADN student from North Central Missouri College (NCMC), recently attended the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) 73rd Annual Convention in Seattle, Washington, representing NCMC and the State of Missouri. The event, held April 9–13, 2025, brought together nursing students and faculty from across the nation to engage in leadership development, professional networking, and forward-thinking discussions.
Palmeri, who serves as MONSA Vice President and School Chapter SNA Student Liaison, described the convention as an inspiring and transformative experience. “This conference was energizing and inspiring. I feel more passionate than ever about nursing and leadership. I’m proud of the relationships I built, particularly with the Pennsylvania State SNA, which was the largest group of students there and the most impactful presence. It was meaningful to meet students from across the country and represent Missouri on a national platform.”
During the convention, Palmeri participated in workshops, focus groups, and innovative sessions designed to prepare student nurses for the future of healthcare. Among the highlights was a hands-on workshop where Palmeri earned certification in seizure first aid—a vital skill given that epilepsy affects 1 in 26 individuals. “It was incredible to learn about the different types of seizures and how best to care for patients experiencing them. This training adds another certification to my growing toolkit.”
Palmeri also attended sessions offering evidence-based strategies to improve exam performance and manage test anxiety. These resources proved invaluable as he prepares for the NCLEX exam. “It’s always helpful to gain additional test prep knowledge. I’ll take all the help I can get!” Palmeri noted.
The convention’s closing ceremony featured award presentations, the introduction of the new NSNA Board of Directors, and an inspiring endnote by Dr. Randolph F. R. Rasch, who spoke on “Serendipity and the Path to Leadership.” Palmeri found Dr. Rasch’s message deeply impactful, saying, “It made me realize that even challenging moments in my nursing career will contribute to my growth and future success.“
Throughout the week, Palmeri championed NCMC’s nursing program, taking every opportunity to highlight the institution’s excellence for working nurses returning to complete their RN degree. His advocacy ensured that thousands of students nationwide—including attendees from Guam and Hawaii—heard the name “North Central Missouri College” and “Trenton, Missouri.”
A special highlight of the convention was Palmeri’s meeting with Nurse Mike from SimpleNursing.com, who recorded a short congratulatory video for NCMC’s May graduation cohort. Palmeri expressed his excitement, saying, “This was a truly special moment, and I hope it serves as a spark for us students as we approach the finish line.“
Reflecting on his experience, Palmeri shared, “Attending the NSNA Convention was an incredible honor and an unforgettable experience. I’m deeply thankful to NCMC and the NCMC Foundation for supporting my participation. I return feeling inspired, equipped with new tools, and eager to apply what I’ve learned to support our students, grow our programs, and elevate nursing across Missouri.”
