At North Central Missouri College, we believe in the power of potential—of helping individuals discover their path and connecting their talents and passions with meaningful opportunities. This is especially vital for first-generation and lower-income students, whose potential is far too often overlooked but whose contributions can transform communities.

As the director of TRIO programs, including Upward Bound (UB) and Student Support Services (SSS), I see firsthand how access to education and guidance creates bridges to careers that bring fulfillment, stability, and purpose. These programs are more than federal grants from the Department of Education; they are lifelines for students and families navigating the challenges of higher education. Now in our third decade of service to rural North Central Missouri, UB and SSS have grown into a proud village of supporters dedicated to fostering success.

My own story is deeply connected with this mission. More than a few years ago, I walked through the doors of NCMC as a first-generation, lower-income student. I was unsure of my future but filled with hope. With the guidance of mentors and the support of a “village” that believed in me, I began to understand my career destination and the role I wanted to play in helping others achieve their dreams. That experience drives my passion for the work we do today.

The idea of a “building a village” is not just a need for parents raising children—it can also be a support system for students forging their way through the complexities of education and career planning. Through Upward Bound, we prepare high school students for the journey to college, providing academic enrichment, mentorship, and cultural experiences. For students already in college, Student Support Services offers academic advising, tutoring and personal support to ensure persistence and graduation. Together, we serve as a village for students and their families, helping them navigate the path to higher education and beyond.

When students succeed, our communities flourish. The ripple effects of education are profound: gainful employment, strengthened economies, and enriched social connections. The success of one student often inspires others in their family or community to pursue their dreams, creating a cycle of empowerment and progress.

I am proud of the village we’ve built at NCMC and of the legacy UB and SSS continue to create. We remain committed to bridging the gap between potential and opportunity, ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has the chance to lead a life of purpose and fulfillment. Together, we’re not just building careers; we’re building futures—and stronger communities for all.
