North Central Missouri College (NCMC) has been recognized as an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education, a distinction that highlights the college’s strong commitment to student access and post-college economic success.
The designation was announced as part of the Carnegie Classifications. This year’s update introduced a new Student Access and Earnings Classification, designed to better measure how colleges and universities support students’ social and economic mobility.
Under this methodology, institutions that exceed established thresholds for both higher access, serving a broad and diverse student population, and higher earnings outcomes for former students are designated as Opportunity Colleges and Universities. North Central Missouri College was classified as Higher Access, Higher Earnings, placing it among just 478 institutions nationwide to receive the distinction. The 478 institutions designated as Opportunity Colleges and Universities represent a wide range of institutional types, sizes, and sectors and are located across the country. Together, they demonstrate how colleges can play a pivotal role in advancing economic opportunity and workforce readiness.
As a next step in its national work, the Carnegie Foundation will engage with institutions earning the Opportunity Colleges and Universities designation to better understand and share the strategies driving student success. These conversations will focus on leadership decisions, institutional practices, and innovative approaches that support student persistence, completion, and long-term economic mobility.
