North Central Missouri College (NCMC) is proud to announce that longtime faculty member and Doris Ryder Art Gallery Director Jim Norris has been granted Professor Emeritus status upon his retirement at the conclusion of the current academic year. The honor was formally recommended by the NCMC Faculty Senate and approved by the Board of Trustees in recognition of Norris’s outstanding contributions to the college and its students over a distinguished 25-year career.
Norris has been a dedicated educator and influential member of the NCMC community, teaching a wide range of art courses including Art Appreciation, Drawing, and Painting. His passion for the visual arts and commitment to student learning have left a lasting impact on generations of students. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Norris has been a consistent contributor to campus life, serving on numerous Faculty Senate committees and supporting shared governance initiatives.
A hallmark of Norris’s tenure at NCMC has been his leadership as director of the Doris Ryder Art Gallery. Through this role, he helped cultivate an appreciation for the arts both on campus and within the broader community, providing students and visitors with access to diverse exhibitions and creative experiences.
The Faculty Senate cited Norris’s exceptional dedication, collegiality, and service as key reasons for his nomination to emeritus status; an honor reserved for faculty who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and achievement.
Reflecting on his career, Norris shared, “I have spent the past thirty years in education—twenty-five of them here at NCMC and five at Trenton High School. During my time at NCMC, one of my favorite parts of the position has been serving as the director of the Doris Ryder Art Gallery. I certainly appreciate most of the administrators and the dozens of inspiring colleagues that I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside for the past twenty-five years. I cannot thank them enough for their support, teamwork, and friendship.”
He added, “Most importantly, I’ve had the pleasure of teaching countless students in my Art Appreciation, Drawing, and Painting classes at NCMC. Each semester, I strove to share my love of art and artmaking in hopes that they would discover their own appreciation for the visual arts. I’ve had so many talented and interesting students who have consistently challenged me—mostly in a good way—to be a better instructor and artist.”
Following retirement, Norris and his wife, Shana, have relocated to the Kansas City area. He looks forward to continuing his artistic pursuits and spending time with family, including his children and grandsons.
