Talent Search STEM Tutor

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time
DEPARTMENT: TRIO – Talent Search (TS)
REPORTS TO: Talent Search Director
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
CONTRACT TERMS: Temporary, Academic year
LOCATION: St. Joseph, MO – within the SJSD

Position Summary: Talent Search tutors assist students in the TS program with a variety of subjects and classes by providing individual tutoring, test monitoring, and study sessions.

Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide math and other appropriate school-level subject instruction to TRIO-TS students
  • To maintain confidentiality of student performance and faculty feedback
  • To maintain records according to instructions of the Talent Search tutor coordinator
  • Assist in promoting the services and program of Talent Search
  • Attend and participate in all training sessions and seminars
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education: Associates degree or enrollment in a higher education program required.  Program of study should include math, science, English or an appropriate STEM academic field. Bachelor’s degree in education, science, math, English, computer science or related STEM academic major preferred

Experience: Preference for applicants who have professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Talent Search program participants and whom have knowledge of TRIO programs. Ability to effectively tutor participants and track academic progress. Ability to document all services provided to Talent Search participants. Excellent organizational, verbal and communication skills Demonstrated sensitivity to, respect for and understanding of the needs of disadvantaged students.

Skills: Ability to teach and provide tutoring to students in an understandable manner. Strong writing and math skills. Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Physical Demands: Moving about between and within buildings in the SJSD; reaching, pulling, and pushing when filing; able to do repetitive tasks; remain stationary at a desk while writing and instructing students.

Environmental Demands: Fluctuations while moving on tile and carpeted floors in a heated and air conditioned environment.
