CONTRACT TERMS: Full-Time, 12-month
LOCATION: St. Joseph School District, St. Joseph, Missouri
Position Summary: Provide a full range of counseling and advising services to students. This position is fully funded through a federal TRIO grant. The primary goal of TRIO is to assist people with the preparation for, entry to, and completion of postsecondary education. Some Saturdays and evenings will be required.
Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to
- Recruit project participants from SJSD target schools
- With other TS staff to plan recruitment marketing campaign
- Work with SJSD and TS staff to identify and select participants
- Manage a caseload of 250 participants from 6th-12th grade:
- Provide Individual Service Plans (ISP) for each participant.
- Implement services specified in ISPs (academic advising, workshops, etc).
- Monitor participant academic progress according to ISP.
- Document services in project database.
- Create and implement programming to promote school persistence, improve graduation rates, and prepare participants for post-secondary education
- Maintain effective communication and liaison with Target School personnel, college staff and administration, and other community agencies who collaborate to provide services for participants and their families.
- Comply with the guidelines required by the US Department of Education in reporting of grant activities.
- Assist with:
- Preparation of TS grant application and annual performance report
- Monitoring and reporting on TS benchmarks and other statistical data
- Recruiting tutors and supervising tutoring.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in education, counseling, social work, higher education administration, or closely related field. Tutoring experience preferred.
Experience: Three years professional experience preferred working for federal TRIO programs, academic support programs or similar programs for low-income 6-12 graders who are potential first-generation college students. Experience providing academic advising services, 21st Century employability skills, non-cognitive skills, and college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy information to an assigned caseload of 250 secondary school students (grades 6-12). Experience advising and assisting low-income and potential first-generation college students with the college admissions and financial aid process on an individual and group basis. Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those of Talent Search preferred.
Skills: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, and keep accurate, detailed records. Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel. Must have the ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Physical Demands: Moving about and between buildings in St. Joseph School District and NCMC campus; reaching, pulling, and pushing when filing; able to do repetitive tasks; remain stationary at a desk while typing and answering phones. Travel to target schools required; valid driver’s license and personal vehicle required.
Primary schedule is Monday through Friday; some evenings and weekends may be required.
Environmental Demands: Fluctuations while moving on tile and carpeted floors in a heated and air conditioned environment.
