Jack Smith, long-time NCMC faculty, read from one of his seven published novels at an Author’s Reading Event on April 9th in the Dorris Rider Art Gallery. Co-hosted by Art’s Alive and the NCMC English Department, the event invited community members, NCMC faculty and staff, and students, to listen the first few chapters of the novel, If Winter Comes. Listeners were invited to ask questions about the writing and publication process, the need for revision, and the varied subject matter of Smith’s work.
Smith taught at English at NCMC from 1983-2007. Since his retirement, Smith has served as an adjunct faculty member, teaching both Introduction to Philosophy and Introduction to Ethics. In the Fall of 2025, Smith will be teaching Introduction to Creative Writing as an NCMC online course. Community members are invited to join the class, to develop their creative writing skills and encourage their own creative writing goals.
The event was held in the Dorris Rider Art Gallery on the NCMC campus, which is currently displaying a selection of the NCMC permanent art collection. Notable in the images from the event is the collection of masks that was generously donated to NCMC by the Hoover family.
