North Central Missouri College is proud to offer the SAIL Program (Students Accessing Individualized Learning). SAIL is a two-year, inclusive postsecondary program designed to support students with neurodevelopmental disabilities as they pursue meaningful education, employment, and independence through individualized learning.
SAIL students at NCMC’s Trenton campus have access to a variety of certificate and degree pathways, including specially modified curricula for the Early Childhood Professional Certificate and the IT Professional Certificate. Students attend classes alongside their peers, promoting inclusion, integration, and meaningful participation in campus life.
A key focus of the SAIL program is workforce readiness. SAIL incorporates employability skill development through structured schedules, academic expectations, job shadowing experiences, campus engagement, and individualized coaching. Students also take courses aligned with their individual interests, helping them build essential skills that prepare them for meaningful employment after graduation.
For many students, SAIL represents their first opportunity to fully experience college life in a supportive and inclusive environment. Paul, a SAIL student pursuing an IT Professional certificate, shared, “SAIL gives me the time I need to work on what I struggle with, and I feel welcomed by my new allies. I’ve reached a place where I can achieve what I want and how I want to do it. Despite limitations, I’ve found a peaceful environment.” His experience reflects the program’s emphasis on belonging, confidence-building, and personal growth.
SAIL students benefit from a full-day structured schedule, academic tutoring, peer connections, and collaboration with campus partners such as Accessibility Services, TRIO, and Residence Life. Students also have the option to live on campus, offering an additional opportunity to build independence while fully engaging in campus life.
Families also see the impact of the SAIL program on students’ futures. Kimberly, a SAIL parent, shared, “I am deeply grateful to NCMC and the people behind the scenes for recognizing untapped potential and creating a pathway for individuals to earn the credentials needed to become employable in their chosen careers. My daughter, Ellie, has always had a passion for working with young children in daycare and PreK settings. Before the SAIL program, I honestly did not know how we would help her reach her career goals. Thank you, NCMC, for providing this uncommon level of attention and support.”
