North Central Missouri College recently completed the first session of the Welding for Industry course, which is a new short-term welding program at the Savannah Campus. Eight students completed approximately 80 hours of entry-level, basic welding skills in an accelerated, non-credit format. Instructional topics included OSHA10 certification, print-reading and welding symbols, and plenty of applied practice time, primarily focused on the MIG welding process.
NCMC instructor, Mr. Robert Karr, stated, “Our goal for the course was to provide an opportunity for students to learn and practice welding techniques and to get an idea of welding competencies employers might be looking for if they applied for a welding job.” Karr continued, “Skilled welding takes time and more practice, but we hope this course gives students the confidence to pursue numerous welding career opportunities that currently exist in the region.”
Students were provided their own set of welding personal protective equipment for use during and after the course. At the conclusion of the two week course, a job fair was held at the Savannah campus where participants were able to meet with area companies who had welding positions available.
