Practical Nursing (PN) students at North Central Missouri College recently put compassion into action through a meaningful service project organized by the Student Practical Nurses Association (SPNA).
As part of their spring semester service initiative, PN students created and delivered Easter baskets to residents at a local nursing home. The project included the entire PN class and emphasized the importance of holistic patient care, addressing not only physical needs but also emotional well-being, comfort, and individual preferences.
Students reported gaining a deeper understanding of how small acts of kindness can significantly impact quality of life for residents in long-term care settings. Feedback from nursing home staff indicated that every resident received an Easter item, resulting in smiles, joy, and a meaningful holiday experience for all.
The SPNA is a student-led organization within the Practical Nursing program that completes service projects during both the fall and spring semesters. Each project is selected through a class vote, encouraging student leadership, collaboration, and community involvement.
“This project allowed our students to see firsthand the impact of compassionate, patient-centered care,” said Shanna Thomas, PN Program Coordinator at North Central Missouri College. “By taking the time to consider residents’ emotional needs and personal comfort, our students demonstrated the heart of nursing while strengthening their connection to the community.”
The Easter basket initiative reflects SPNA’s continued commitment to service learning and reinforces the college’s mission to prepare caring, competent healthcare professionals through hands-on experiences.
