In honor of North Central Missouri College’s centennial, NCMC will spotlight 100 inspiring stories throughout the academic year. These narratives will showcase the voices and journeys of our alumni, students, faculty, staff, donors, and the communities that have shaped TJC/NCMC’s legacy. Each story is a tribute to the people throughout history who make NCMC extraordinary.

I grew up in a house on the corner of 17th and Main. It was few blocks south of my elementary school (NCMC). I attended kindergarten in the basement of the library. After kindergarten I attended Central Elementary School, which is now part of NCMC – Geyer Hall. When I started elementary school there were three elementary schools, Central, Norton and Brainerd. S.M. Rissler was built in 1962, and I attended my 6th grade there.

When I completed elementary school, I attended junior high school in the old Central School. I then attended high school in the high school building on 9th St. I then attended the junior college that had moved from the top floor of the high school to Central School. I spent a lot of time in that building.

I transferred to Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State, I met my wife there and after we graduated, we got married and I found a job in Ottumwa, Iowa. I worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for 36 years and retired in 2010.

I feel that I had good teachers while attending school in Trenton and enjoyed my time there. I am fortunate that my parents felt that getting a good education was important. My wife and I also felt that education is important, and we currently fund scholarships at Indian Hills Community College here in Ottumwa and at NCMC.

The centennial celebration will continue throughout the academic year, and NCMC invites alumni, students, faculty, staff, and our communities to be part of the story.
